Slice of Life 4
Jack Gantos in the House!
This week our school is fortunate enough to be hosting awarding-winning author, Jack Gantos. As fans of his Joey Pigza and Jack Henry series, my class, in particular, has been eagerly awaiting his arrival. And, after our first assembly this morning, Mr. Gantos does not disappoint! Engaging, witty, funny... The man is a true entertainer and a very gifted public speaker. We were on the edge of our seats as he spoke to us about his history and his craft.
One Gantos message that I hope my students took away from our meet and greet today relates to the power of revision. Mr. Gantos shared that as he writes a novel, each and every day, he revises the manuscript from the start. In other words, if it takes him a year to write a novel, he revises the content not once, not twice, not three times, but 365 times! And, he enjoys it! Perhaps, Mr. Gantos can inspire us all to more fully embrace the revision process? Yes? Of course, he can!
Come on my darlings, be the best writers you can be! Play with word choice! Consider sentence fluency! Pay attention to conventions! And, don't forget, this Thursday we will have our own private session with Mr. Gantos. Let's dazzle him! :)
